Avengers 2: The Jossening

Behind the cut - a few thoughts on finishing up the Bucky & Sam fic after having seen Age of Ultron, with spoilers.

While there are a number of very small things that Age of Ultron would've changed, most of this fic, including all of the main plot, actually still works just fine as-is. Better, even, in some ways, since Sam is an Avenger now in canon as well as in my fic. (The original draft of the fic, posted in the previous post, directly references Sam being an Avenger. I don't think I ever specifically said it in Wing & a Prayer, but it's sort of the implication. If he's not officially an Avenger, he's definitely going out with them.)

But then there is THE GOD DAMN HELICARRIER. XD

One of the first scenes I wrote was that scene where they get their first look at the helicarrier coming to save them, despite having thought the helicarriers were destroyed. In the fic, it was supposed to be this really dramatic scene, since the reader thought they were all destroyed too. Therefore, in the movie, when the big reveal on the helicarrier and SHIELD happened, my reactions were twofold:

1 - "EEEEE HELICARRIER THIS IS SO COOL THIS MOVIE IS AWESOME!"
2 - "GODDAMMIT I WROTE THIS EXACT SCENE A YEAR AGO IN A FIC I HAVEN'T POSTED YET."

So that happened. XD

I ended up going with the scene exactly as written and just noting that the fic was started before AoU and isn't movie compliant. If I'd actually finished in a timely fashion, it wouldn't even have been a thing since it would've been posted before the movie anyway. (And heck, since the fic clearly takes place some time after AoU - at least a year or two, based on how well Bucky's been integrated into the team - then it's equally plausible something could've happened to destroy SHIELD again, or at least to destroy their helicarriers, so this is yet another helicarrier from the one we saw in the movie ...)

Other than that, though, I was pleasantly surprised at how little AoU actually would've affected this fic. I guess it helps that it's focused on two characters who either weren't in AoU at all, or weren't significantly affected by it (except for Sam becoming an Avenger, which works fine with this fic) and nothing in this fic really goes into recent backstory or who else is in the Avengers and so forth. Ironically the two founding Avengers I explicitly have going on missions in this fic are also the two who aren't retired/missing/etc at the end of AoU, Natasha and Steve. (Total coincidence, but hey, go me!)

And the fic deals heavily with HYDRA, while movie said that HYDRA had been wiped out (or at least they believed so), but, well, HYDRA. One head grows two, hiding in plain sight, etc.

So yeah, I perhaps should've tried harder to finish up the fic beforehand, because little deviations from canon do nag at me, but I'm surprised how well this fic still works, and could easily be brought into full compliance with AoU with just a few minor tweaks.

Cap3, now ... THAT'S the one that's almost certain to joss this completely. XD
