Winter Sunlight

Thursday fanwork rec

I've been reading this one slowly because it's a very intense read and also LONG, but it's also really fantastic, probably one of the best fics I've read in this fandom:

In A Strange Land by [archiveofourown.org profile] MrsEvadneCake (Stranger Things, 180K, all characters + canon pairings + very light Steve/Nancy/Jonathan)

It was written between seasons 2 & 3, so it doesn't take S3 canon into account and basically functions as an alternate season 3. And man, does the writer ever nail the horror vibe of the first two seasons. It's not particularly gory, but parts of it are definitely straight-up horror in the Stephen King mold; it's excellent mood reading for this time of year. I loved how well the cast was handled - all the characters get their own moments to shine, even minor ones like Mr. Clarke and Kali's bunch and Dr. Owens, there are excellent feels for The Party and Steve/Nancy/Jonathan (mostly gen, but with vague hints at the pairing), and the character voices are really well done. It's one of those stories that you can sink into, especially at a time of year when the horror vibe is particularly welcome.

Day 24: Secret Injury (1)

An anon on Tumblr requested this one with Ward and Danny.

--

Waking up feeling like shit wasn't exactly something Ward had any lack of experience with. In fact, the symptoms were all too familiar: pounding headache, queasy stomach, raging thirst.

Opening his eyes to find Danny glaring at him was new, however.

He closed his eyes. He could not deal with that while feeling like this.

Day 24: Secret Injury (2)

The other request I got for this prompt was from Punknatch on Discord, who wanted Danny hiding an injury from the rest of the Defenders.

Jessica was not going to be the one to ask Danny if he was okay. She was not going to be the -- she was not ...

Oh fine.

"Hey," she said, leaning forward and giving his arm a shove. "You spacing out on us, Fist Boy?"
