I'm going to England :D

And I'm finally buying tickets because I SUCK at planning. (Although it's not actually any more expensive than it was when I first looked into it three months ago. Thank you travel gods.)

So basically, I am flying into the UK on approximately the 3rd, and leaving sometime during the week of the 15th. The weekends are already spoken for, the first because of [personal profile] frith_in_thorns's wedding which is my whole reason for flying over there in the first place (WEDDING! \o/), and the second because of Nineworlds. Around those commitments, though, I'm hoping to sightsee throughout as much of the England/Scotland/Wales part of the world as possible, and meet up with anyone who lives there. I was there for a couple of weeks in 2000, when I was a wee young thing on a honeymoon backpacking trip around the UK and western Europe, so I've already done most of the big tourist things (saw Stonehenge, British Royal Museum, Salisbury Cathedral, etc) and really had the most fun just traipsing around stone circles too obscure to have names or randomly wandering the Welsh coast, so I'd like to do more of that kind of thing. And I really didn't see Scotland AT ALL the first time, so I want to get up there for a day or two at the very least.

I haven't quiiiiite bought the tickets because I don't want to commit myself and end up barely missing something awesome that's on, like, the 18th of August or something, but right now I'm probably looking at flying out on the 17th or so.

So, UK flistees, who would like to say hi? :D

AAAAH. So jealous.

I -love- visiting the UK. You might have noticed I have a soft spot for London in particular XD

Hope you have a blast there!
I think it'll be a lot of fun! :D I was there once, almost 15 years ago, and liked it a lot.
I'm so excited for you! I went a few years back and had the most marvelous time (I'm a die-hard Anglophile so I was all about the twittens and the mews--heck, I even waxed poetic about the *mud*!

I'm envious you're going to get to see more of the UK than I did--have a *wonderful* trip, take lots of pix, and be sure to share them with us on your return!
Ooh, I'm thrilled for you!! I look forward to hearing about your trip!! We got to go to the UK (mostly around Oxford and London, with another day spent in Windsor) quite some time ago, and I'd go back in a heartbeat. I love that you're getting to go!!
Ooh, jealous!

Check out Pembroke Castle, if you're in that area! It's probably my favorite castle I've visited, if only because you get to really climb up in every nook and cranny. (Although there's a distinct lack of railings!)
OOH. *_* EXCITED FOR YOU.

I had the luck to backpack around Scotland last year, and do a bit of England and Wales before that. If you like pretty coastal things and ruins, and are looking for recs, I've still got my maps of all the spots we visited. (England and Wales: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1fuPyBLFZsseShk7dEoJDMVOj0rA&usp=sharing Scotland: https://www.google.com/maps/d/u/0/edit?mid=1ebqJtmgcmNyi3L4vezG9zXn7CAY)

Llanthony Priory in Wales, Corfe Castle near Bournemouth, Tintagel and St Michael's Mount in Cornwall, Arthur's Seat in Edinburgh, Fingal's Cave near Oban, the entire Isle of Skye, and the Callanish Stones on the Isle of Lewis are really cool places to see if you're in those areas. :D
Thank you! And ooh, thank you for the suggestions! I DO love coastal scenery and ruins! I don't know exactly how much time I'll have for exploring different areas, but I will definitely keep these under consideration. :D
Hope you have a great time and get a lot of sunny weather. Do congratulate Frith and wish her all the best.
Is that August? If so and you happen to be somewhere near Derby, we could meet up, possibly, depending on RL stuff. Derby itself is not so exciting from a visitor's POV, though Derbyshire is gorgeous! There's the dales and the start of the Peak District - oh, and Chatsworth House, of course! Lots of other old houses around here, and not far from Nottingham and all that offers either!

But totally understand if this is out of your way and so isn't possible. It might be possible for me to travel somewhere to meet up, but depends on how far etc. And I need to talk to hubby first!!

Either way, hope you have a great time!! :D

August, yes, oops! :D And I definitely want to meet up while I'm there, if you are able to. It should be possible for me to go just about anywhere, time and other plans permitting of course.
Scotland
Just seen this: http://www.responsibletravel.com/holidays/scotland/travel-guide/best-time-to-visit-scotland

Obviously, you have no choice on when you go, but the bit about midges is worth reading. It's midge season in August, but during the day and not near water, you should be fine. Of course, if you go to Loch Ness (which I would totally recommend), you may have to check about midges before going to avoid the worst of them!

(If you do make it to Loch Ness, and you're okay with small boats, then avoid the ferry and find a small boat instead. There's a village just after the castle that offers small boat tours (Drumnadrochit). You connect with the loch much better on a small boat, and really feel the eeryness of the place. There's just something about being so close to the water that makes it special. I think this might be the company we went with, though it looks like they've upgraded their boat a little: http://www.lochnesscruises.com/)

I LOVE Edinburgh!! It's a great city with lots of interesting things to see and do!! So I would highly recommend a visit there!! Stirling Castle is also well worth a visit (and there's an old gaol in Stirling I remember visiting too).
Re: Scotland
Thank you for the suggestions! :D I'm not too worried about midges (I come from Alaska, land of mosquitoes, so I'm used to coping with swarms of biting insects) but that's good to know about!

HI! :DDD

You should PM me and let me know where you are! I don't have my schedule worked out in any sort of detail yet, but we have to meet up while I'm there!
Have a great time!

If that's the 3rd of July, I'll actually be in England at the time, but it's for a conference (so no time for sightseeing).
No, it's in August - I didn't even realize that I hadn't mentioned the month!

That's interesting that we're both going this summer though!
*raises hand* I've been away for a few days, so only just seen this! If you'd like a guided tour of Oxford, I'm free for most of your second week, and it's actually a time I can take some leave. Also, I have a magic card (okay, it's my Staff Card ;D) that gets me through lots of closed doors, if you fancy it.

I'm here anyway, and can book things at the last minute (there are advantages being the boss around here :)), so no pressure to let me know any time soon, but would be fab to meet you :D :D
Oxford, as it happens, is EXACTLY where I'll be for at least part of the time I'm there, so we will definitely need to meet up. :D I'll let people know my exact plans once I nail things down in a little more detail!
I'm up in Manchester, so if you're planning to visit Yorkshire, Lake Distric or make your way up to Scotland, you're welcome to use me as a crash pad. I've got a big house, and am 15 min from Airport & city centre. Are we talking July or August?
